Zap to launch electric sports car in 2008
Ashutosh | Jan 31 2007

The sports car gives you a sense that you have finally arrived where you wanted to be all your life and with it also comes the fashion and the glamour that you associate with a sports car.

But just in case if you are a environmentalist by nature you will really feel guilty of burning fuel that causes global warming and etc and which will be against your principals for which you have stood all your life.

If Zap, a small electric car manufactures who till now only produced electric scooters and economy cars have an idea that can change your mind ‘An electric sports car’.

The redesigned car is originally Lotus APX which was designed with a gas powered V6 engine and zap will just be taking out that thing and replacing it with an electric one a thing that is not new.

They are planning to launch an electric sorts car which will do a 0 to 60 miles run in 4.8 seconds and will go the distance of 350 miles before needing a charge. The charging can be done in cool 10 minutes in which you can have coffee and a burger to fuel your metabolism and you are again ready to hit the road.

Zap did not announce the battery manufacturers but the Altair Nanotechnologies and ‘EEStor’ might be the ones. Zap says that the engine will give the max horse power of 644 with a touted top speed of 155 mph. Although not much when compared to other cars but then its electric which means clean sheet in terms of emission norm.

They are not the first to conceptualize the thing but Tesla Motors and Wrightspeed are the other producer who have already made foray in the field with there uber-expensive cars which are in the price band of $92,000 to $120,000. Compared to that the Zap is pegging the price of this sports car at $60,000.

Every year an estimated 30,000 consumers buy supercars and the industry around it is pegged at $3 billion.

So there is a place for a new clean offering. The car will be available commercially by the end of 2008.
